No writing inside, save a couple of notations in the table of contents. ~ But in this symposium, there comes into play essentially a new stage in the purification of metals and in the influence of extremely small concentrations of foreign atoms on the physical, Chemical and mechanical properties of the metal. The purification of a semi-metal, germanium, by Pfann, in 1952, thanks to a physical method called zone melting, has permitted the elimination of the elements phosphorus, arsenic and antimony as far as concentrations of the order of 10 -10. One knows the remarkable applications in electronics of germanium purified in this way; it then becomes sensitive k very small additions judiciously chosen. In the course of the past eight years it has been possible to apply this technique to different common metals. ~ 486 pages
