Chaosium's second edition of Runequest was printed over several years, with changes in presentation along the way. Here, I'm concentrating on the box sets.

[2nd edition RQ is often mistakenly called the 1st edition. It's not. The 1st edition of Runequest was released in 1978 as a staplebound book with a beige cover and red/white lettering. It has different typeset than the 2nd edition books, and the Glorantha map near the beginning is clearly hand-drawn in the 1st edition rulebook. It is seldom seen, and somewhat rare today.]

These 2nd edition box sets can be found in at least three distinct printings: The earlier 2" deep "Thick Box" common to the early Chaosium game releases. Earlier versions (1980) refer to a "$26 Value" in the yellow banner on the lid, and stating that "T.M. [trademark] applied for" while later printings drop those references. Earlier printings had the brown monochrome covered rule book, and later printings (~1981) used the red monochrome cover (and printed the errata sheet inside the front cover).

The last 2nd ed. Runequest was released in the 1" deep "Thin Box" that Chaosium used in its product lines of the time (still same product code: 4001-X). Despite being marked nowhere in the set contents, I judge this to be in 1982, based on the products listed on the back of the "What's In The Box" sheet (Borderlands, Trollpak, Questworld, etc.). Contains the monochrome red cover rulebook. These thin box sets are somewhat less common.

There is also a green monochrome cover rulebook which I'm still trying to place. Since it has no errata inside the cover, I believe it came before or after the brown book.

[Games Workshop (UK) printed a licensed version of 2nd edition RQ. Scroll down a little on our Runequest page for more info.]

A paperback and hardcover with the same color cover art as the box lid were sold separately. In 1984, Runequest production was transferred to Avalon Hill, and became the 3rd edition.
